Q: What is special about Web-Folio?
This innovative new service allows anyone with a simple knowledge of Windows or Mac to publish hundreds of pictures on the web. You have the control to add, delete, rotate, and comment your pictures as well as keep fresh, up-to-date information on your front page, and it is very affordable.

Q: Is Web-Folio software?
No. Web-Folio is actually a service. Our program stays on our server and is available only to our subscribers. You don"t have to license it, maintain it, or give it disk space.

Q: Will Web-Folio help me gain business?
It"s been proven again and again that a Web presence brings business. With Web-Folio, you can provide "key words" and a page description which will put you in the Web search engines. Also, pictures say a thousand words, and you have room for approximately 500 pictures.

Q: How can Web-Folio help me if I have all the business I need?
Web-Folio can save you time and money. Putting your pictures at one location that is accessible world wide makes costly and slow mailings obsolete. Meeting with your clients via phone and Web can keep travel time down to a minimum.

Q: What if I already have a website?
Web-Folio can serve as your own refined website or as an auxiliary to your current one. A simple "see my portfolio" button or link can be added to your current website. You can save on hosting fees by moving your website to our server; hosting is included in your subscription.

Q: Can I sell my wares through Web-Folio?
Web-Folio is designed to be more like a showcase than an e-store, but the front page allows for several links by which you can expand in many directions.

Q: What does a Web-Folio look like?
You're looking at one! Our aim is to emulate a portfolio book -- simple, elegant, and understated. Its purpose is to show off pictures -- not to be flashy and exciting on its own. Brown leather, black paper and white bordered pictures define the overall theme.

Q: How does it work?
With a web browser, you can surf over to your Web-Folio and enter our management mode with your password. From there, with various checkboxes, buttons, and receptive text fields, you have the control to customize your Web-Folio. When you create directories (and subdirectories) and upload your digital pictures, they are "magically" arranged in a set stylized presentation for you regardless of size or shape. Pictures then become "clickable" for enlarging or moving the viewer to more pictures.

Q: Can I change Web-Folio's design?
We are happy to quote price estimates for custom features, but the idea behind Web-Folio is that it is a template and is generic -- your pictures are the "punch"; this keeps our price down. Q: Are there any optional features?

Q: How much does it cost?
Not much ... and with no contract. There is a $250 setup fee; optional features are available for an additional $50 fee, each; and then for only $25 a month you get 100MB of space.

Q: How reliable is your service?
If we may be so bold as to say so, it's rock-solid. There are two aspects to consider, and both are well-controlled.

First, there's the software used to run the server and to provide the unique Web-Folio service. Any software updates (and we're always considering new features for our customers!) are carefully tested before being put into production and then again after they're released to ensure that the transition causes no hiccups for our customers, while server updates for security reasons are carefully considered and evaluated to make sure that they have performed as expected on test machines and at other sites.

Second, there's the server hardware itself and the server's location. We run fault-tolerant equipment so that should something like a power supply fail it won't take down the server, and backups are made every night to recover in the unlikely event of a hard drive failure. Meanwhile, we host our servers at DataPipe's New Jersey facility, where they have redundant network connections to the Internet and have backup power and generators available. [When most of the Northeastern USA went dark in the 2003 blackouts, we and our customers stayed up, connected, and in business for every minute!]

Q: Can you help me register my domain?
Yes! It's a fairly straightforward process and we can do it -- assuming the domain you want is available, of course -- as part of your signup or later if you decide to use your own name. [Remember that you can also have your own web-folio.net address for free with our service.]

While there are many, many companies out there who can register your domain for you, we happen to like gkg.net for their low price ($10/yr or less), simplicity (they don't try to sell you a dozen extra products and services when you're registering), and customer service, and we expect that you would like them, too. We get no referral bonus or other benefit by recommending them except that they're more likely to stay in business -- which, of course, benefits everyone :-)

Q: How long have you been in business?
We've been working specifically with the picture gallery software that has grown into Web-Folio since 2001, and have been in the computer programming, support, and consulting business since before 1990.

Q: Do I get charged per page?
No, indeed; the only thing considered is your overall space, and with room for about 500 photos you are in good shape. You can add special graphics and other pages and take away from the number of photos you can fit into your Web-Folio, of course, but you can lay out your galleries in as many collections and pages as you wish.

Q: Can you help me with my ranking in search engines?
Yes, but we want to clarify up front that we're neither the cheapest nor most specific ranking consultants available; our specialty is producing great software and providing excellent service. Tuning your rankings is a complex and detailed process that takes weeks at a minimum as the search engines return to your site and update their listings.

One site we've found very educational is selfpromotion.com, where you can learn all about how search engines read your pages and decide how to sort them as well as how you can improve your ability to be found.

Q: Do you test Web-Folio on different browsers?
Yes! We test with Internet Explorer, Netscape, and Mozilla under various Windows versions as well as Mozilla and Konqueror under Linux. Furthermore, we work well with Explorer and Safari on Macs as well as Firefox, Opera, and even Lynx, just to mention a few.

Q: Can you help me with metatags?
You have keyword and description fields right in your management front page, so you can not only enter your site's description (what will be shown in a search engine result) and keywords (what the search engine uses to figure out if your site is a match) but also update them at any time!

Q: Can you provide ranking reports?
Not at this time, although we are evaluating how we might provide that service. In the meantime, you can surf over to google, yahoo, altavista, and other search engines to search for your site and see where your listing comes up.

Q: Can you provide web tracking statistic reports?
Yes! You can get full statistics of your site's traffic by month, day of the week or month, and time of day, see what pages were requested and how many times, see the domains and countries of your visitors, referring search engines and sites and their search phrases, and more.

Q: What software do I need to use your service?
Nothing special, since all of the work is done by our server. You need
  • a computer (and even a public computer at the local library would probably work just fine)
  • a way to get your pictures from your camera, whether on a memory card, by a cable, or film developed to floppy or CD, but the camera access software should come with your camera if you need it
  • a web browser to upload pictures, view your site, and make changes.

  • Q: What software do you support?
    We can assist you with general questions regarding your operating system (Windows, MacOS, Linux, and more) and your browser (IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Firebird/Firefox, Opera, Lynx, or other) and some questions regarding accessing your camera, but we don't try to be experts in every possible configuration. We can usually get you to the point of talking to your site and entering management mode, and from there everything is easy, but if we can't get that far we can often provide an educated guess about the problem to save you some time with whomever you choose to repair or reconfigure your system.

    The Web-Folio template doesn't require any special software to create web pages, since all of that work is done for you by our server, but if you wish to create additional pages (such as a price list or an "About Us" information sheet) you can use any editor to do so and then upload the page(s) manually (or, for a small fee, we will be happy to take care of it for you). We recommend Mozilla since its editor is simple, straightforward, and free, but any will do. Note that we have seen FrontPage completely wipe out every single file on a client's site, presumably because it didn't know how the Web-Folio software works. We *don't* recommend it!
